Andrew Bodnarchuk first caught the eye of scouts in the Maritimes more than a decade ago...
After putting up 39 points in 58 games during the 2003-04 season for the Dartmouth Subways of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, the Hammonds Plains defenceman was drafted in the fifth round of the 2004 QMJHL Entry Draft by Moncton. Bodnarchuk had been considering going the NCAA route but a trade to his hometown Halifax Mooseheads helped change his mind.
With the Mooseheads, Bodnarchuk quickly showed off his offensive prowess. During his first season in Halifax, Bodnarchuk tallied 23 points for his new team including six goals and 17 assists. That was enough to catch the attention of the Boston Bruins who selected him 128th overall in the fifth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Bodnarchuk returned to the Mooseheads the following year and, as a sophomore, became one of the QMJHL’s top scoring defencemen. The 5’11 blue liner scored 16 goals and added 41 assists to finish the season with 57 points in just 63 games. He would score 43 more points during the following year.
After junior, Bodnarchuk joined the AHL’s Providence Bruins where he became a fixture on the blue line. He also laced up for Boston for five games during the 2009-10 season.
In 2012, he was dealt to the LA Kings. After playing with the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs for two seasons, Bodnarchuk joined LA’s “black aces” during their 2014 Stanley Cup run. As a member of the team’s practice squad, he helped the club complete their run on June 13th when the Kings captured the Stanley Cup for the second time in three seasons.
