Born in Kingston, Ontario, Stienburg was selected as a forward by the Guelph Platers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 1983 draft.  In his first season with Guelph, he registered 55 points in 65 games.  At the end of the season, he was drafted in the first round of 1984 NHL draft – 15^th overall by the Quebec Nordiques.  

After finishing his junior career with the London Knights in 1985-85, Stienburg split time between the Quebec Nordiques and the Fredericton Express of the American Hockey Leagues (AHL) from 1985-86 to then end of the 1988-89 season.  In his time with the Nordiques, he collected 12 points in 71 games.

After the 1988-89 season, Stienburg moved to the East Coast, joining the Halifax Citadels for two full seasons.   He then moved on to play for the New Haven Hawks of the AHL for the 1991-92 season before finishing out his playing career with the Springfield Indians of the AHL in 1993-94.

After retiring from playing hockey, Stienburg returned to Halifax to begin his University coaching career. He accepted the position of Head Coach with the Saint Mary’s Huskies Men’s hockey team in 1997.

Stienburg is still currently coaching the Huskies.  He has spent a remarkable 19 years with Saint Mary’s, winning a number of individual and team awards.  He has won 4 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Coach of the Year Awards and 3 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Coach of the Year Awards.  Under his leadership, he has led the Huskies to 3 AUS Men’s Hockey Championships and the 2010 CIS Men’s Hockey National Championship. His other coaching achievements include coaching Team Canada to a silver medal in the World University Games in 2001 and to a gold medal in 2007.
