Andrew Bodnarchuk –NHL player for Boston Bruins, LA Kings, Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche; 2015 Calder Cup champion
Andrew Bodnarchuk first caught the eye of scouts in the Maritimes more than a decade ago. After shining as a Dartmouth Subway in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League in 2003, the Hammonds Plains defenceman was drafted in the fifth round of the 2004 QMJHL Entry Draft by the Moncton Wildcats, but was swiftly traded to the Mooseheads. During his first season on Haligonian ice, Bodnarchuk tallied 23 points - including six goals and 17 assists, and was named Halifax’s defenceman of the year, and split honours for team MVP. His offensive prowess caught the eye of the Boston Bruins and in 2006, Bodnarchuk was selected by the Bruins 128th overall in the fifth round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Bodnarchuk returned to the Mooseheads the following year and, as a sophomore, became one of the QMJHL’s top scoring defencemen. The 5’11 blue liner scored 16 goals and added 41 assists to finish the season with 57 points in just 63 games - scoring 43 more points during the following year. In
After his junior year, Bodnarchuk joined the AHL’s Providence Bruins where he became a fixture on the blue line. He also laced up for Boston for five games during the 2009-10 season.
In 2012, he was dealt to the LA Kings. After playing with the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs for two seasons, Bodnarchuk joined LA’s “black aces” during their 2014 Stanley Cup run. As a member of the team’s practice squad, he helped the club complete their run on June 13th when the Kings captured the Stanley Cup for the second time in three seasons.
During the 2014-15 season, Bodnarchuk and the LA King’s affiliate team the Monarch’s brought home the AHL championship, the Calder Cup. Bodnarchuk drew an assist on the championship-winning goal, playing a crucial role in clinching the cup. The win solidifies the belief that Bodnarchuk is going nowhere but up.
After the 2014-15 season, he left the Kings organization as a free agent and signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Following a promising training camp in Columbus, he was assigned to begin the 2015–16 season with AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters. In 14 games, Bodnarchuk was leading the Monsters defence on the top pairing, contributing with 8 points, before he was recalled to the Blue Jackets on November 21, 2015. He made his debut with Columbus, playing his first NHL game since 2010, in a 5-3 defeat against the San Jose Sharks the following day. In his 11th career game, Bodnarchuk recorded his first NHL point in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on December 4, 2015.
Bodnarchuk played in 16 games with the Blue Jackets before being picked up by the Colorado Avalanche. He made his debut with the Avalanche on January 6, 2016. In 21 games with the Avalanche, he recorded 2 assists.
